54,000+ Kentucky students reached

Across the state of Kentucky, Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) offer strong programming designed to encourage and support the next generation of healthcare workers, at all levels. The programming provides a series of experiences and engaging activities for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Programming ranges from one day career fairs and summer camps to more coordinated, longitudinal experiences that offer deeper learning of various health careers. These experiences give future health professionals the tools and confidence they need to be successful at reaching their goals.

Each of the regional AHEC offices have dedicated personnel responsible for health careers pathways programming activities. Regional activities include: school visits and demonstrations, career expos, and health careers camps. For more information, please contact the coordinator for your area or the University of Kentucky AHEC Health Education Coordinator. A list of coordinators and their regions is listed at the bottom of this page.

Program Examples

Depending upon the specific AHEC, programming options may differ. Below you will find some examples of the types of activities and experiences your regional AHEC can offer.

  • Large scale one-day showcases that bring together a number of different health care professionals under one roof. Each profession gives a sneak peek into what it means to go into their field.
  • Customized programs and workshops in schools or community venues.
  • Health Career “Clubs” for students.
    • Depending upon the specific AHEC, these clubs may meet weekly or monthly and allow students in depth opportunities to learn from and observe health care professionals through presentations, tours, shadowing and the use of demonstration models.
  • Summer Health Career Camps
    • Camps may be campus or community based and involve students commuting to sessions each day, or they may be residential in nature. The duration of any camp will vary in length from region to region.

Most of these activities are available and open to any student in Kentucky interested in a health career. Annually, the KY AHEC program presents over 1300 programs to more than 30,000 students from early elementary school years through middle and secondary schools. Questions about region specific programming can be directed to the health career coordinator serving your region of the state.
